After leaving college without a clear idea of what I wanted to do I decided I would try my hand at teaching one of my true passions in life, swimming. As soon as I taught my first lesson I knew that this was something I wanted to do and six years later I am happier than ever having been given a chance to be part of the Sussex Swim School.

I am an open water swimmer at heart and although I do a fair share of my training in the comfort of the pool nothing beats cutting through the water with the sun shining above or battling the elements when nature would rather you turned back! I compete in various open water swim and triathlon competitions both local, national and international. I have a few trophies for my efforts. I aim to do one big charity swim per year raising money for Water Aid and have my sights on the channel in a few years’ time.

Swimming is and always has been a big part of my life and nothing brings me more joy than passing these skills onto the next generation!

I learnt to swim at the Redhill and Reigate Swimming Club when I was very young and started my competitive swimming career there. After a family move I joined the Croydon Amphibians Swimming Club and competed for them for many years both in youth and masters swimming. Swimming runs in my family as my mum was a competitive swimmer and a swimming teacher as well. I gained my qualifications about 20 years ago when I was still competing. I have been teaching swimming since then for the local council, local swimming pools but for the last 10 years for the Croydon Amphibians Swimming Club.

I had my first child, Ben in 2009 and my second Annabelle in 2013. After relocating to Horsham and no longer being able to continue my career working for a firm of solicitors in Wimbledon or travel to Croydon to teach, I was lucky enough to find Sussex Swim School to continue with my first love, teaching children to swim.

I don’t have a great deal of spare time but when I do I enjoy cycling, walking and gardening. My partner is a keen Formula One fan and I have grown to love it too and hope to attend some live races around the world. I would like to get back into open water competitive swimming once my children are older.

Safeguarding Children

I started swimming when I was a child growing up in Spain, I can’t ever remember not being able to swim. My Father taught my brother and I the basics of lifesaving aged 5 because he knew we were in and out of all our neighbours’ pools and the beach.

When we returned to the UK, I swam and competed with the swimming club until I was in my late teens.

I was a mortgage advisor for ten years and whilst doing this job I qualified to become a swimming instructor, I taught swimming in the evenings. Redundancy followed and I decided to follow my swimming passion and made teaching swimming my full-time career. I’ve not looked back.

The reward from teaching swimming is unbelievable. To see the excitement in a child’s face when they can’t wait to tell me where they came in a gala to the first strokes and they realise they swam on their own.

Now, I have two teenage children who both compete in lifesaving competitions all over the country and they have their proud Mum watching in the side-lines.

I am delighted to be part of The Sussex Swim School.
I have has spent my working career involved with leisure provision having spent my full time working career in leisure centre management. During this time I qualified as a Level 1 and 2 swimming teacher, and have since added the Adult and Child qualification to that.

If I say that I often bump into people who remind me that I taught their child to swim, and that child has just graduated from University, you will probably guess how long I have been teaching swimming. However that doesn’t mean I have lost any enthusiasm for teaching swimming, in fact I have become even more passionate about making sure that every child I teach are given those early fundamental skills and confidence that are needed for this essential life skill.

Along with teaching swimming, I am also a qualified tennis coach, teaching the under 8’s at Horsham Tennis Club, and also a qualified trampoline coach, taking sessions at a Disability Sports Club.
When I have time I enjoy playing tennis, baking (I’m told I make an awesome chocolate brownie), and skiing in the winter months.

I have been teaching swimming for many years. I am a mother of three children, all of whom are good swimmers. My passion is surfing and swimming in the ocean. I am in the water through the darkest of winter days paddling out in the waves at 6am to snorkelling with my kids on the warmest of summer days. I love the ocean and believe every child should have the skill to be able to safely and confidently enjoy the water too. The health benefits to the mind and body of swimming and connecting with water are a life skill I am passionate to share and teach. My ethos is “Swimming should be fun, children should leave the class feeling happy, confident, calm and balanced.” It is important not to push or rush a child, allowing them time to build a love and passion for swimming in a nurturing environment. This will give them a life skill they will use forever.

Coming from South Africa I have known how to swim since I can remember, swimming has always been a big part of my life. I swam throughout my school years competitively as well as swimming for my District.
Found teaching later on in my life leaving the corporate world behind and have not looked back, have loved every moment. Teaching is so rewarding and creates an amazing relationship between both parent and child. I have been teaching for 4 years now and it’s a privilege watching little ones grow from strength to strength as swimming is a life skill and a sport that you can enjoy throughout your lifetime.

Qualifications:

STA Level 1 and 2 in Swimming Teaching
RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers

I started swimming at a few months old and began competitive swimming at Atlantis at 10 years old. Then, at age 12 I became the fastest ranked swimmer for 200 metres backstroke for my age in the UK and continued competitive swimming until 18.

I started swim teaching at 16 and loved it straight away. My favourite parts of teaching are watching a child make progress and knowing that they will have those skills for the rest of their lives.

I have just finished 4 years studying Chemistry at the University of Groningen in The Netherlands, but I see myself teaching swimming for a very long time.
