I qualified more than 15 years ago and still love teaching swimming. I am qualified to teach pupils with special needs, rehabilitation classes for cancer patients ( 1-2-1 lessons), triathletes, master classes, pre-school, parent and baby/toddler, swim school, Swim fit…

Over the years I have learnt, and continue to learn what works and how to capture the students attention. Although I have taught all stages of the ASA/STA plan over the years, I believe that My niche is the basis of swimming, the early stages, Level 1-6. This is where engaging the pupils is key. The foundations are set here and too many times I have seen un-enthused teachers moving children from level to level and in the end its just a pay check. Most times teachers are not monitored for performance and therefore end up becoming dry and limited in the teaching practices. If the teacher is not enthused how can the children be? Make it fun at all the levels of whatever plan you are teaching. Add diversity and creativity to capture the imagination of the pupils. Trust, connection and giving personal attention to each pupil goes leaps and bounds in developing a pupils will to progress in this discipline.

I was a natural water baby. I loved the water and was always swimming in our pool in Johannesburg, South Africa.

We moved to Cape Town in my teens so I grew up by the Ocean, learning to surf. I became a surf lifeguard at the age of 16 in my home town. Respect for the Ocean was a must and saving lives became an everyday thing.
Swimming in the early hours of the morning before school for surf lifesaving, waterpolo training and life saving competitions and waterpolo tournaments.

I moved to the UK in 2012 and became a pool lifeguard, but wanted to achieve more, so I got involved in helping with the swimming lessons. I then trained to become a Swimming Teacher.

After leaving college without a clear idea of what I wanted to do I decided I would try my hand at teaching one of my true passions in life, swimming. As soon as I taught my first lesson I knew that this was something I wanted to do and six years later I am happier than ever having been given a chance to be part of the Sussex Swim School.

I am an open water swimmer at heart and although I do a fair share of my training in the comfort of the pool nothing beats cutting through the water with the sun shining above or battling the elements when nature would rather you turned back! I compete in various open water swim and triathlon competitions both local, national and international. I have a few trophies for my efforts. I aim to do one big charity swim per year raising money for Water Aid and have my sights on the channel in a few years’ time.

Swimming is and always has been a big part of my life and nothing brings me more joy than passing these skills onto the next generation!

My first memory of swimming is when I was travelling with my family; we were snorkelling in one of the bays off an island in Fiji.  I remember being completely enchanted and mesmerised with the “other worldly” environment of the water with all the fish and beautiful colours. To this day, be it in a pool or in the sea, swimming has always given me a sense of serenity with a spark of magic thrown in.  Growing up in Portugal gave me the chance to pursue my passion for the water with easy access to beaches and lakes which in turn, led me to compete and refine my swimming abilities.

When I returned to England, I knew that I could not leave swimming behind and decided to turn my love for swimming into a career.  To my delight I found that teaching suited my personality and I thrived from the sense of pride and passion that comes from teaching children and adults alike to love and respect the water as I do.

I learnt to swim at the Redhill and Reigate Swimming Club when I was very young and started my competitive swimming career there. After a family move I joined the Croydon Amphibians Swimming Club and competed for them for many years both in youth and masters swimming. Swimming runs in my family as my mum was a competitive swimmer and a swimming teacher as well. I gained my qualifications about 20 years ago when I was still competing. I have been teaching swimming since then for the local council, local swimming pools but for the last 10 years for the Croydon Amphibians Swimming Club.

I had my first child, Ben in 2009 and my second Annabelle in 2013. After relocating to Horsham and no longer being able to continue my career working for a firm of solicitors in Wimbledon or travel to Croydon to teach, I was lucky enough to find Sussex Swim School to continue with my first love, teaching children to swim.

I don’t have a great deal of spare time but when I do I enjoy cycling, walking and gardening. My partner is a keen Formula One fan and I have grown to love it too and hope to attend some live races around the world. I would like to get back into open water competitive swimming once my children are older.

I have always loved swimming. I became a member of Kingston Royals Swimming Club from the age of 5 and I was a competitive swimmer until the age of 16. I still continued to swim with the masters as well as taking part in sponsored swims for charity.  Although I no longer swim at the club, I still enjoy the sport to keep fit and active.

To continue my passion for swimming, I gained my ASA swimming teacher certificates and I have been teaching ever since.  I have much experience in teaching Babies and Children.

I find swimming teaching very rewarding and there is nothing I enjoy more than watching the children I teach progress. I have taught many children who have started with me as a complete non swimmer and have gone on to swim with clubs.

Swimming is a life skill and a great form of exercise and I believe every child should learn to swim.

After having my first baby in September 2018 and having a wonderful year on maternity with my Daughter Isabella, I am excited to get back into the pool and to be working with The Sussex Swim School.

From a young age I swam competitively for Wembley Swimming Club and was Brent Junior Champion Swimmer in Front Crawl, Back Crawl and Butterfly for a number of years. I trained as a swimming teacher when my son Jonathan was a small baby. I have a passion for swimming, and teaching children to swim in a professional, friendly, safe and fun environment. We have a wonderful team of expert swimming teachers who include: Julia, Rachel, Tessa, Sara and our new Swimming Coach, Louise. Our combined years of swimming teaching experience totals over 80 years.

We keep our skills and qualifications up to date in teaching swimming, life guarding, first aid and aquatics by regularly attending continuous professional development training courses. I believe this keeps us “fresh” and motivated.

Teaching children to swim is the most rewarding, fulfilling and exciting career. Every day is different. Swimming is such a huge and important part of my life.

Safeguarding Children

I started swimming when I was a child growing up in Spain, I can’t ever remember not being able to swim. My Father taught my brother and I the basics of lifesaving aged 5 because he knew we were in and out of all our neighbours’ pools and the beach.

When we returned to the UK, I swam and competed with the swimming club until I was in my late teens.

I was a mortgage advisor for ten years and whilst doing this job I qualified to become a swimming instructor, I taught swimming in the evenings. Redundancy followed and I decided to follow my swimming passion and made teaching swimming my full-time career. I’ve not looked back.

The reward from teaching swimming is unbelievable. To see the excitement in a child’s face when they can’t wait to tell me where they came in a gala to the first strokes and they realise they swam on their own.

Now, I have two teenage children who both compete in lifesaving competitions all over the country and they have their proud Mum watching in the side-lines.

I am delighted to be part of The Sussex Swim School.
I have has spent my working career involved with leisure provision having spent my full time working career in leisure centre management. During this time I qualified as a Level 1 and 2 swimming teacher, and have since added the Adult and Child qualification to that.

If I say that I often bump into people who remind me that I taught their child to swim, and that child has just graduated from University, you will probably guess how long I have been teaching swimming. However that doesn’t mean I have lost any enthusiasm for teaching swimming, in fact I have become even more passionate about making sure that every child I teach are given those early fundamental skills and confidence that are needed for this essential life skill.

Along with teaching swimming, I am also a qualified tennis coach, teaching the under 8’s at Horsham Tennis Club, and also a qualified trampoline coach, taking sessions at a Disability Sports Club.
When I have time I enjoy playing tennis, baking (I’m told I make an awesome chocolate brownie), and skiing in the winter months.

"Hilary has taught my 2 boys swimming for the last 4 years and in that time they have progressed amazingly. She is authoritative in a way that children respond to, whilst also being very fair. Her great strength is in knowing which strategies to employ to achieve the best results from each of her students. My 7 year old has developed from a nervous, shy swimmer, to a very confident and competent one. My 9 year old had a tendency to play around, found it tricky to concentrate and aimed to be the fastest rather than performing correct swimming technique. With him, Hilary took a firmer approach, making him slow down and take his time.
Hilary is a true professional and endeavours to get to know each and every one of her students (and their parents) individually. Her communication with parents is excellent and I have always felt fully informed with regards to how the boys are progressing. I feel she goes out of her way to develop each student individually, encouraging them to achieve their maximal potential and moving them up through each stage as and when they are ready. In addition to all this, she manages to ensure that the children are aware of safety issues related to swimming and being in and around water. Above all she ensures that each and every swimming lesson is great fun! A massive thank you Hilary for being a truly fabulous swimming teacher! The entire team of teachers are fab."

"Hilary’s swimming lessons are simply the best! My daughter has been having lessons with Hilary since she was 1 year old – she is now 10 and through Hilary’s passion for swimming and having such well structured lessons, my daughter is now a very competent and able swimmer. What’s more important is my daughter enjoys swimming and looks forward to her lessons every week. On holiday, people are often amazed at my daughter’s confidence in the pool. By having small classes and with Hilary in the pool with the children, she is able to provide individual tuition and help the children progress quickly. I really can’t recommend Hilary and her team of amazing swimming teachers enough – In my opinion the Best Swim School and they won The Best Swim School in The UK a couple of years ago."

"Well, words cannot describe how pleased I am with my son's progress in such a short space of time. When he started with Hilary 3 months ago, he was scared to even dip his toe in the water. After a few one to one private lessons and half a term of group classes, he is now performing standing dives into the deep end, swimming over 10 metres unaided and will happily go under water to collect objects from the bottom of the pool. In Hilary's words, he has gone from "shivers and shakes and tears and gasping" to "a confident little swimmer" - a task that all other swim schools I have tried have not accomplished in 3 years. Hilary did it in 3 months!!
Thank you once again! "

"My 8 year old son has been swimming with The Sussex Swim School since he was 3 months old. His confidence and enthusiasm for swimming continues to astonish me and I am certain this is due to the high quality and friendly teaching he receives.
I am especially keen on the early introduction to water safety - twice my son has fallen into water and used water safety techniques taught at The Sussex Swim School.
The small number of children in a class and 1:1 attention results in brilliant progress and confidence boosts.
I always recommend this swimming school to friends and will continue to do so."

"Oscar and Emmy have been taught by Hilary at the Sussex Swim School for nearly nine years and they have loved every lesson with her. She has taught them life saving skills in a caring professional manner that has been as much about fun as it has about learning. They are both confident swimmers that love the water and look forward to their classes each week, thanks to Hilary's teaching."
